Car owner Geoff Barley is on course to clock up a memorable motoring milestone by being behind the wheel for an amazing one million miles. What makes Geoff’s achievement even more astonishing is the fact that he will have accomplished the feat using just four vehicles in twenty-two years.
So far, he has notched up more than 700,000 miles in his four cars and is adding to the total every day. The first of his cars, a Peugeot 405 estate, clocked up 236,000 miles, while the replacement, a Peugeot 406 estate ran for another 216,000 miles. Both of the cars were still running well when he traded them in. His third car was another 406 and managed a staggering 235,000 miles before being involved in a crash and was written off by the motor insurance company. However, he was convinced the car still had plenty of life left in it, so he bought the vehicle back from the insurers, fixed it up himself and gave it to his daughter. The hand-me-down car sailed through its MoT and is again protected by cheap motor car insurance.
Geoff then bought a Peugeot 308 that had 22,000 miles on the clock, and he has already added another 26,000 miles to the total. So, his four cars have travelled 711,000 miles and the number is going up every day.
Geoff said: “I started driving when I did my National Service in 1955/56 and I estimate I have driven 1.5 million to 2 million miles in my motoring career but I will reach the one million mark for my last four cars alone. I wanted to tell of my experience because it’s ridiculous to talk of ‘high mileage’ cars as those which have done around 100,000 miles. Modern cars will go for much longer than that – but only if they are properly and regularly maintained and serviced. Regular servicing and maintenance are key factors in trouble-free motoring, whatever the mileage.”
