In the past week we have discussed in detail how to drive safely during the cold weather, however sometimes no matter how well you drive you could find yourself in an accident and having to claim on your car insurance. If you do experience an accident in your car – whether it was your fault or not – you will appreciate the features included that are there to protect you from harm. Therefore, drivers who have safety as one of their top priorities when investing in a new car will be interested to hear that Euro NCAP has revealed their pick of the safest 2012 vehicles.
There were four criteria each of the cars had to be tested against, including: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist systems. The winners included Renault Clio for safest Supermini, Volvo V40 for Family Car, BMW 3 series for Large Family Car, FIAT 500L and Ford B-Max for Small MPV, Ford Kuga for Small off Road 4×4, Hyundai Santa Fe for Large off Road 4×4, and Ford Transit for Business and Family Van. All eight of these vehicles were awarded a five star safety rating, with the Volvo V40 reaching the highest combined score of any car ever tested by Euro NCAP.
Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen said of the tests: “Euro NCAP is recognizing the efforts of some manufacturers already offering a higher level of occupant protection in their cars, but today safety means more than protecting occupants in a crash. Through an expansion of our tests and the assessment of important active safety systems, our aim is to inform and allow all road users to benefit from safe cars with advanced systems in the most affordable way, and to contribute in reducing the number of road accidents.”
Runners up include the Ford Fiesta in the Supermini category, the Opel Mokka in the Small Family category; the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid in the Large Family category; the Subaru Forester in the Small Off-Road 4×4 category and the Range Rover in the Large Off-Road 4×4 categories. The Jeep Compass and the Renault Trafic were two vehicles that greatly underperformed both only receiving two stars.
