The Friday Five – American Muscle Cars

The Friday Five is back with a bang this week, or perhaps more appropriately, a burble and a growl, as we’re talking all things muscle cars! Specifically, American muscle! Whether you love them or loathe them, everyone has something to say about American muscle cars. So, check out our top five muscle cars and let us know what you think by commenting below:

5. Pontiac GTO (60s era)

The Pontiac GTO comes in at number five on our list this week thanks to its distincitive looks, particularly in an era when many American muscle cars were very similar in design. Of course, the GTO has similarities to other cars too, with its long bonnet and twin headlights, however, there is something very aesthetically pleasing about the double grille design whilst under the bonnet it was possible to extract around 500bhp from the Ram Air engines.

4. Shelby Cobra GT500

Fourth on the list is the Shelby Cobra GT500. Perhaps the most iconic of the American muscle cars thanks to, not only it’s role in a number of high profile movies, but it’s design and appeal to all generations. It was marketed as the Cobra rather than the Mustang thanks to its modifications and improvements compared to previous Mustang models. The GT500 is a rare collector’s item with them being very hard to come by – it’s not often these days that a car insurance quote would be taken out on one!

3. Dodge Charger

The Dodge Charger comes in at number three. Not only is it a burly brute of a car, but it also carries a rather legendary status thanks to its success in the NASCAR championship and its appearance in high profile films. The best of the Charger models, undoubtedly would be the pre 1975 models, with the late 60s, early 70s models being the most iconic of the bunch.

2. Chevrolet Camaro Z28

The Camaro Z28 from the late 60s was the pick of the Chevy Camaro’s thanks to several performance related upgrades and some styling revisions. The Z28 was the best looking of the Camaro’s, and one of the best looking muscle cars ever. They’re more subtle and smaller than, for example, the aforementioned Charger. The Z28 Camaro is also more performance focused than other muscle cars whilst it also sounds fantastic! We like it a lot.

1. Ford Mustang Mach 1

Despite our love for the Camaro Z28, in first place this week is the Ford Mustang Mach 1 produced from 1969 to 1973 – for us the greatest American muscle car of all time. The reason behind this is pure and simple – it’s the best looking of them all! Let’s be honest, muscle cars are all about style and the noise of the engine and the Mustang Mach 1 has style and good looks in abundance whilst the roar of the engine is nothing short of spectacular. Congratulations to the King of muscle!
