Best Family Cars 2013

When choosing a family car you will often consider features that one wouldn’t necessarily prioritise when purchasing a vehicle otherwise.

Instead of more speed and aesthetic beauty for instance, the requirements most will seek will include space, reliability and better safety, the latter in particular is also likely to lower car insurance premiums.

Choosing the right car

However, as the family car market thrives, with more and more car manufacturers now offering family car options, choosing the right car has become even harder.

With that in mind the U.S. News and World Report, with its reputation for helping Americans make the best choices in terms of consumer products, education and healthcare, has named its own Best Family Vehicles for 2013.

The awards, across 19 different categories, aim to help families find the best car to suit their lifestyle, with the final choices based on research gathered from more than 27 million people on the website in 2012, combining quality, size and family-friendly features into an overall score.

Quality was measured using a weighted average of scores gathered from the U.S News Ranking which marked vehicles for their safety, reliability and critical reception. Size was based on seating capacity and interior space, whilst family friendly features considered features deemed helpful to families by editors of U.S. News.

Winners and losers

The awards winners were a good mix of both foreign and American automakers, with import brands taking home nine awards and U.S. based manufacturers enjoying success in ten categories.

2013 proved a particularly successful year for General Motors, taking home the most awards of any manufacturer with six models across three of its brands winning their respective categories – the Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Lacrosse, Buick Verano and Cadillac Escalade.

Success for Honda continued with the Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey winning their specific categories for a third year running. The Lexus RX-350 and Toyota Highlander also mirrored this accomplishment.

It was also the first year that Chevrolet, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Lincoln have won Best Car for Families Awards.
