Driving Abroad – Sweden – Car Insurance

Driving in the major cities of Sweden is not easy because of the narrow streets and confusing one way systems. Parking is also very limited in these cities but when you are out in the countryside you will find plenty of open roads. That is of course as long as you are not breaking the speed limits. Often on these country lanes your car will be the only car on the road.

The drink driving limit is set at 20mg and the police carry out random checks. If caught drink driving you will be given an on-the-spot fine and depending on how severe could be sentenced to prison.

Sights to See

The islands of Tjörn, Klädesholmen and Orust are a must see. Gorgeous views and plenty of open roads will keep you occupied for hours on end. These islands can be reached by getting a ferry from Stenungsund or by crossing the many bridges.

Laws of the Road

  • All car passengers must wear seatbelts at all times.
  • Children under the age of 7 or less than 135cm tall must wear a suitable child seat or booster seat appropriate to their size and weight, no matter where they are seating in the vehicle.
  • Horns must only be used in emergencies in built up areas.
  • Trams always have the right of way on the roads.
  • Dipped headlights must be used during the day by all vehicles.
  • Motorcyclists must wear a crash helmet at all times. This applies to any passengers as well.

Standard Speed Limits

Urban Areas – 50 Km/h (30 mph)
Outside Urban Areas – 90 Km/h (55mph)
Motorways – 120 Km/h (75 mph)

Tips from the Locals

Be aware of any reindeer or elk that may wander onto the roads. This especially happens in the morning or at dusk.

Any drivers that flash or use their horn are usually signalling that they are about to overtake you so be aware of this when travelling through the Swedish countryside.
