Daewoo Auto & Technology was first established as National Motor in 1937 and then in 1962 changed its name to Saenara Motor and was bought by Shinjin Industrial in 1965. Shinjin Industrial changed it's name again after establishing collaborations with Toyota and became Shinjin Motors.

Recently, Daewoo was relocated to a new 2 story building at the Bupyeong-gu headquarters and was given the task to create a new SUV based on GM's Theta car which was to be released in 2006. Recent work include the Daewoo Kalos which was exported globally as the Chevrolet Aveo and was released in late 2005 and the Daewoo Tosca which was the replacement for the Mgnus and appeared in early 2006.

The SUV that was developed using the GM Theta platform was released in summer 2006 and featured a common rail diesel engine, which was a first for Daewoo, along with regular gasoline engines.
