Fury Grows As Young Sports Car Drivers Feel The Heat Of The New Insurance Premium Hike!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

“Sports car owners under 25’s in an uproar about new insurance changes.”

June 10th 2009
Wimbledon, Greater London, United Kingdom.

Young sports car drivers are to feel the brunt of sweeping changes that were made across the car insurance industry in late May which see’s sports car owners that are under the age of 25 to receive higher premiums for their car insurance policies.

The impact of the changes see’s sports car owners under 25 now facing premiums upwards of £7000 a year, based on recent trends on sports car modifications.

In a claim from Uswitch.com, the speed modifications that were typically sought by the owners of sports vehicles increased the risk probability of claims against insurers. In an extract from the Insurance Times, it found that:

“

  • Go-fast extras add an average of £2,682
  • A spoiler hikes the premium by almost £700
  • A young driver’s car insurance could cost up to 223%of the value of the car
  • Adding GTI to a Peugeot 206 could push the cost of insurance up by £6,485
  • 17-21 year olds represent just 7% of all drivers but they pay 32% of UK annual car insurance bill
  • The average car insurance premium for a young driver is £1,730 - more than three times the national average premium of £512
  • Insurance premiums fall by an average of £4,002 between the ages of 17 and 27
All drivers have seen their car insurance premiums rise by almost 10% in the last 12 months. ”

How to get cheap car insurance.

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Obviously one of the best ways to save money is to shop around to make sure you’re getting the best deal. But the factors below can make a big difference in the premium you pay:

Mileage

Yearly mileage is usually a key factor in deciding the cost of your insurance premium. If you travel a lot then you will pay more. Keep your insurer up to date on your annual mileage.

Learner Drivers

Pass Plus is a great way to lower your insurance premiums. Insurers want to see you are a competent driver so passing your test can be added to by taking extra advances lessons. Your premium can be cut by up to 35% if you have an advanced driving certificate.

Alarms and Immobilisers

If you have alarm systems and / or an immobilizer fitted then you are less likely to have your car stolen which reduces your premium. There are some alarms and immobilisers which cut your premium more than others so check with your insurer before you have one installed.

Car Modifications

Modifying your car can add costs to your premiums.

Paying Monthly

If you pay monthly, you will be paying more because you will be using a credit service to pay for your insurance. Some companies charge fees of up to 29% APR for this service so consider paying your premium annually.

Main Drivers

Who you have as the main driver will affect your policy. If you share a car with someone and they have a cleaner driving license then put them as the main driver to save yourself money.

With insurance you get what you pay for, so make sure you’re not paying for ‘benefits’ that you don’t really need:

Courtesy Cars

You will be paying for this privilege (via your premium) so consider whether or not you really need it.

Legal Protection

It is a good idea to be covered in the event that you have an accident which wasn’t your fault and want the chance to claim back any uninsured losses. However, remember legal support is only granted if you have a good enough case.

Roadside assistance and breakdown cover

Do you need this? You may find that you can get cheaper breakdown cover from elsewhere.

Policy Excess

If you are willing to pay a larger excess then your insurance premium will be lower. Voluntary excess is different to compulsory excess to make sure you read the fine print.

Personal Injury / Belongings

Does your cover include personal injury claims and claims on personal belongings? If so, you may need to consider the costs.

Legal Advice

Does your insurance offer legal advice and medical counselling telephone lines? This may also cost a little more.

No Claims Bonuses

You will need to find out if your no claims bonus will be affected if the accident wasn’t your fault. You can also look into whether you can transfer a no claims bonus which was built up while driving on somebody else’s insurance.

You may also want to look into the no claims bonus scheme and how many claims you are allowed before your no claims bonus is affected.

Crazy, but True Car Insurance Claims!

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Below are just some of the crazy, but true car insurance claims which Motor Quote Direct’s clients have reported…

When Animals Attack…
A huge variety of animals have been blamed for causing damage to cars, and indeed causing accidents:

“I was passing through a country lane, where a farmer was herding his cows. A couple of them seemed a bit lively, and weren’t particularly keen to be herded where the farmer wanted them to go… Instead they made a bee-line for my car (which had obviously offended them in some way) - and decided to lean, push against and butt it. Despite the farmer’s best efforts to control his cattle, my car suffered several dents and scratches and a wing mirror was knocked clean off!”

“I was sat in a traffic jam, and felt something sort of tickling my leg… I looked down, and screamed - it was a spider. In a blind panic I tried to get it off me, and inadvertently drove into the back of the car in front of me.”

“I was driving down a residential road, when a dog ran out into the road without warning. I swerved and avoiding hitting the dog; but unfortunately hit a lamp post head on.”

“I had taken my cat to the vet in her carrying basket, and left her in the car whilst I made nipped into the supermarket. However the latch on the basket obviously wasn’t closed properly - as the cat escaped the basket and decided to claw and scratch my leather seats to shreds”.

Doing it for the Kids
It seems that children cause their fair share of accidents too -

“My kids were arguing in the back seat, and it was sending me bonkers. I turned round to give them what for, and accidentally got a bit close to a couple of parked cars scraping the full length of them.”

Getting in Deep Trouble
Another common problem seems to be those streets close to rivers which are liable to flooding.

“I’d been driving for a couple of hours and was feeling tired so I pulled over to catch 40 winks. I woke up and was shocked to find water lapping at my feet, inside the car.”

Steve Pratt from Motor Quote Direct says “The stories which come out surrounding people’s car insurance claims never fails to amuse me.”

“It goes to show that the unbelievable really can happen - so it’s important to make sure you’ve got the right car insurance cover”.

Stranger than Fiction
“We’ve seen everything from fruit, to livestock, to freight boxes falling off the lorries and causing damage to people’s cars; you really couldn’t make it up!”

For most car insurers, it is amazing for them to receive the many unbelievable car insurance claims that are launched against their policies. Although they are often bizarre at times, it is a known fact in the insurance industry that people will try to do make whatever claims they can in order to try and ‘joop’ the insurance company with their chosen policies.
