New Russian car is no slouch

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

The motoring industry in 2011 will be graced by a name completely foreign to many households in the UK; they may be even more surprised to hear that the manufacturer is based in Russia.

It is probably twenty years since any UK car driver got a motor insurance quote on a Russian built car, which in those days would have been more than likely a Lada. The enigmatic Lada was the butt of jokes for many years in the UK and it got to the point where owning such a vehicle in Britain became an embarrassment. Well the new model of car coming out of Russia is nothing like the Lada, in fact it looks distinctly more like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, and it is indeed a supercar.

The Marussia Motors B2 model is truly beautiful. Its sleek, powerful form will seduce prospective buyers all over the world. It really does look like something from a Sci-Fi movie, although its designers have ignored the modern trend of providing supercars with an electric engine. This baby is a truly authentic gas guzzler and is proud of it. The other key feature of the car is that it is made entirely from carbon fibre, not only does this cut down on weight, it also means the car is a lot safer. The on board entertainment system will enable passengers to use Skype technology, which is timely exposure for the communications company as they look to raise their profile. Although no official news has yet been circulated on the cost of the B2 it is expected to come in at around the £150,000 mark, a similar price for example as the new Mercedes SLS AMG.

All in all, 2011 promises to be a big year for Marussia motors, apart from launching the B2 the Russian manufacturer is promising seven new models will be unveiled at the top motor shows in the New Year. The news has the motoring industry agog with excitement as seven new models in one year will be something of a record. Although details are still under wraps the new cars are rumoured to include a small city car, a luxury SUV, a luxury sedan and a sports coupé to complement the B2.

Safely remove icicles from the gutters

Friday, December 17th, 2010

There is no doubt that icicles hanging from houses is the stuff of Christmas cards and arouses the festive spirit in all of us. Icicles form on the property when warm air in the attic melts the snow on the roof. As the temperature rises, the melted water runs under the snow, it will then refreeze and form an icicle as it falls off the roof and gutters of the property.

They do however, represent danger. They can block a whole gutter and then as they hang over it, their spike-like shape presents a major danger to anyone or anything immediately below them. It is not unheard of for icicles to cause huge damage to vehicles parked in the garden. This can be very costly to drivers as it means a claim on the insurance, loss of a hard earned no claims bonus and an increased premium on the next motor insurance quote. It is best to remove icicles from your gutters as soon as they appear. Doing this will prevent larger and much more dangerous build ups.

Removing them can be done very easily. First, place a ladder against the house and near the icicles. Ensure that the ladder is high enough but more importantly that it’s secure and stable. It is always best to have someone holding the ladder and never climb or stand on a roof which is covered with snow and ice. Brush away all the excess snow from the gutter and all around it too. If you have a roof rake, use it to knock as much snow off the roof as possible. Pull the snow downward, to the ground and in the direction of the slope of the roof. Pulling the snow sideways can often damage the roof and break tiles.

Next it is time to remove the dangerous icicles by breaking off small pieces with a chisel and a hammer. Breaking off large pieces may damage the gutters or roof. Work slowly and patiently, removing one icicle at a time. Remove any ice, dirt and leaves from the gutter and if possible try to keep the gutters as clean as possible during the dry winter months. When it comes to ice in gutters the most important factor is prevention. Keep your gutters clean at all times and in all seasons because ice and snow are less likely to form build-ups in perfectly clean gutters. Icicles may add a seasonal touch to the look of your house, but they can be dangerous.

Clocks going back mean increased danger on the roads

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

The clocks went back one hour at the weekend and as with every other year; it means the number of accidents on the roads of the UK will start to increase.

The dazzling winter sun was a contributory factor in 2,684 accidents in 2009 which means, incredibly, that the sun was to blame for more accidents than rain, snow, sleet or fog. Insurance companies know when they give a motor insurance quote that there will be more accidents when the darker mornings and evenings arrive in the UK.

All rush hour drivers face the risk of being dazzled by the sun which is going to be lower in the sky. Nobody is able to change the position of the sun, so drivers need to be prepared for change in conditions. A dirty windscreen will add more danger when the sun is low. If the sun blocks a drivers vision they should slow down accordingly, while keeping an eye on the cars behind, just in case the sun is blocking their vision.

It is not just the sun that will cause problems in winter as night driving always means the motorist has to cope with decreased visibility. The distance any driver can see is shortened and this means that a hazard can often appear, seemingly out of nowhere. It also takes time for the eyes to adjust to darkness after driving on a road that is well-lit. Some vulnerable drivers struggle at night may because it is difficult to make out an identifying shape.

Night driving means it is much harder to judge speed and distance and other vehicles can actually be closer than they appear or they could be travelling a lot faster than first thought. A lot of young drivers who have very little experience of driving in darkness are especially susceptible to have accidents at night. The lights on a vehicle are there for the safety of both the driver and those other road users. To drive a vehicle at night without lights is illegal. Drivers need to check that both front and rear lights are in full working order and clean before starting a journey. And any speed limit should never be exceeded.

Each year research tells us that women are far more concerned about driving at night than men and a lot of elderly drivers avoid driving at night as much as possible. Driving at night means that a driver’s natural alertness is lower and this makes driving at night an even greater danger. Being dazzled by car lights at night is another issue for many drivers, so it is very important to only use the appropriate lights for the weather conditions.

Car Data Checks a must for used car purchase

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Most cars purchased in the UK are second hand and many of these are bought privately. It is always a good idea to complete as many checks as possible on the details of the car. Never arrange to meet the seller anywhere but his home address and certainly not in a car park. Motoring organisations such as the AA offer several services that any purchaser of a second hand vehicle should consider using.

It is a fact that around 30% of used cars sold have some sort of hidden history. This can range from the car being stolen (over 150,000 vehicles are taken without consent every year in the UK) to having the mileage altered.

A Car Data Check (CDC) can cost around £20 for one vehicle with many organisations offering a cheaper rate for multiple checks. Judging by the results, it could well be money well spent. Amazingly, 4% of cars checked turn out to be one of the 600,000 vehicles written off by insurance firms every year. A massive 25% reveal the car has finance on it and 20% have had a number plate change at some time in their lives. The CDC will also ensure the vehicle has the correct Vehicle Identification Number.

Once the car has passed the Car Data Check it is worth spending a little more on a vehicle inspection. A comprehensive inspection will give the potential purchaser a check on many key elements of the car. The interior, including all visual electrical and mechanical equipment, plus the body and paintwork on the exterior of the car, will all be checked detailing any previous accident or damage. A robust 10 mile road assessment is carried out, and at the end of the inspection the purchaser is given a verbal and written report.

This may sound over the top for the purchase of a second hand car, but many vehicles change hands for well over £10,000, a figure that usually represents the second biggest purchase of their lives. Spending an extra £100 or less to achieve at least an element of peace of mind represents good value on a big investment. Of course once all the checks are done and the purchase is agreed, the buyer must get a motor insurance quote on the vehicle before proceeding.

Don’t let a hose do a pressure washers job

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Living in a home with a driveway will probably mean pulling in and out of the driveway two or maybe three times each day. Trips to and from work, the supermarket or maybe even to the gym, and they all have an adverse affect on the surface.

If the home is a two car household the driveway will take a beating. Mud, sand, dirt from the road as well as oil and grease can easily be brought onto the driveway from the vehicles. The dirtier the roads, the worse a driveway can look. A hose could give the driveway a cleaner look, but there is a much better method of cleaning the driveway, and that is pressure washing. Before using any pressure washing equipment, remember to put safety first. Wear safety-toe non-slip sole rubber boots. Wear goggles to protect the eyes from the back blast from the water or dirt particles. Do not direct high velocity streams of water at anyone! Wear gloves and keep away from electrical devices such as lights and power outlets. It is also a good idea to avoid breathing in any vapours or mists while power washing.

Before starting remove all things from the driveway that will be in the way, and this includes the vehicles. It would be silly to have taken out any driver car insurance for protection, only to cause damage to the vehicle by hitting it with debris. Which is why looking around and picking up any debris, such as litter and kids toys is a good idea.

If there are any new amounts of oil and grease or even tyre marks, these should be treated first to make sure they are disposed of. This can be done by soaking them with sawdust. Any older grease and oil marks should be treated by a de-greaser. Then soak the whole driveway with cleaning solution for 10 minutes. Doing this will allow the grease to break up; it will also make the driveway look much better.

Turn on the power washer and start spraying the driveway in even strokes. There are cleaning solutions available which can be used on surfaces like concrete, asphalt, and cement; these will make the driveway look brighter. Another great tool for removing ground in grease is the turbo nozzle. The nozzle will direct the water onto the affected surface with a very high narrow stream which will allow easy removal of all dirt. Once the driveway has been pressure washed and cleaned, a good idea is to consider resealing the surface to protect it in future.
